Summary of Research Programs:
1.  Dr. VanLear is involved in an ongoing program of research on "Communication Processes in Alcoholism & Addiction Recovery."  This includes: (a) Social support processes, (b) Sobriety maintenance strategies in a 12 step program, and (c) Emotional communication & sobriety.  A multi-year longitudinal investigation is now in it's 5th year and the 4th phase of data collection.  In addition, an initial study of computer mediated support for addiction recovery has been completed, and planning
for a more extensive investigation is underway.
2.  Communication and Relational Processes.  This research program involves dynamic modeling of the communication processes involved in relationship emergence and maintenance.

VanLear, C. Arthur. Scheduled Trajectories and Responsive Adaptations: A dynamic model of communication and relational evolution. This paper is the result of a long-standing research program examining communication and relationship evolution. A theoretical/mathematical model is proposed and new data are used to illustrate it.
